Steep and Stroud
All Saint's Church, Steep
All Saint's Church, Steep dates from the 12th century, with many later additions and alterations. In 1207 it was a chapelry with its own curate under East Meon in the Winchester diocese, but in 1867 Steep became a parish in its own right and in 1927 became part of the newly formed diocese of Portsmouth.
In the past ten years a good deal of restoration and maintenance work has been done. The church is kept unlocked during daylight hours. It stands within a lovely well-kept churchyard with views to the South Downs. Many visitors remark on its peace and beauty.
The same can be said of the interior, where the kneelers are very well known, as is the Whistler window, engraved in memory of the WW1 poet Edward Thomas, who lived and wrote in Steep for a time.
Stroud Church
Sometimes called Stroud Mission Church, this was built in Queen Victoria's Jubilee year in 1896. It is in good physical condition, though some decoration work is needed.
